Ravi Singh FarmhouseMeeting the challenge of designing a courtyard farmhouse on 5 acres of arid land required afforestation first to create a micro ecosystem. The project focuses on keeping natural elements intimate to the built environment. Plantation, water and courtyard transfuse into the heart of the house. Earth mounds shelter the ground level making a more intimate setting. The design that is introverted in layout creates a feeling of repose even when used occasionally. The house breathes through the day while keeping secure. A system of wooden louvers for the doors and windows keeps the heat out and allows for modulated ventilation and filtered sunlight. These louvers along with articulated grills, railings and sky louvers create an ornamental casing to naturally rising stone clad walls. Local lime stone along with timber creates a warm texture. Bathrooms with open-to-sky courtyards are visually integrated with the bedrooms. The farmhouse is designed to reflect the "open invitation" lifestyle of a distinctive Indian household. |
